In 2022, the United States had the highest underground natural gas storage capacity (UGS) in the world, amounting to a total of 134 billion cubic meters (bcm). Most of the UGS facilities in the U.S. are in depleted natural gas or oil fields that are close to consumption centers.
In comparison, China had a UGS capacity of just 18 bcm in 2022, which was considered as a threat to the security of supply. To address this issue, China is expected to increase its UGS capacity to around 70 bcm by 2030, with 21.5 bcm of storage capacity currently under construction and a further 29 bcm in planned capacity additions by 2030.
