The return on equity (ROE) of the Italian banking industry increased overall between 2016 and 2023, despite periodic drops. The lowest value was recorded in the last quarter of 2016, when the ROE stood at negative 10.8 percent. Italian banks recovered fast from that by reaching a ROE of 7.3 percent in the next quarter. Another sharp decrease took place in the first half of 2020, primarily due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2022 and 2023, the ROE increased sharply, reaching 14.1 percent in the last quarter of 2023.
