As of 2022, global carbon dioxide removals amounted to roughly two million metric tons (GtCO₂) per year. Under the IEA's Net Zero Emissions (NZE) by 2050 scenario, CO₂ removals through direct air capture (DAC) and bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) would rise to almost one GtCO₂ by 2040. This would require the rapid scaling up of these technologies.
CCUS technologies account for around eight percent of cumulative global CO₂ emissions reductions from 2022 to 2050 under the NZE scenario.
