During the 2021/22 school year, 8.7 percent of Israeli 13-year-olds actively participated in competitive sports. This age group accounted for the largest share of active athletes among children in the country. Overall, between the ages of seven to 13, there is a steady increase in the share of young athletes within their age group. By the age of 18, the percentage of active athletes decreases to 2.7 percent.

An active athlete is defined as an athlete who participated in a certain minimum of competitions the year. The required number of competitions depends on the field. Additionally, an upper threshold of year of birth is applied. Only those born before a certain year are considered an active athlete. The threshold also depends on the specific sport.
