In separate questions, respondents were asked if they had ever been told by a doctor or other health professional that they had high cholesterol. Respondents who answered affirmatively were asked in separate questions if they had been told by a doctor or other health professional that they had high cholesterol during the past 12 months, and if they were taking prescribed medicine to help lower their cholesterol. Respondents had to have been taking those medications or had high cholesterol during the past 12 months to be classified as having high cholesterol.
