Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative carbon dioxide allowances sold for 21.03 U.S. dollars per metric ton in the 64th RGGI Auction, held on June 5, 2024. This was a 31 percent price jump from the previous auction, and the highest clearing price in the RGGI's history. In total, 16 million allowances were sold.
The RGGI is a cooperative, market-based program among the states of Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Vermont, that sets a cap to reduce power sector emissions. RGGI states distribute CO₂ allowances at quarterly auctions, where they can be purchased by power plants and other entities.
