Approximately 16.1 million carbon dioxide (CO₂) allowances were sold in the 64th Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI) auction, held on June 5, 2024. One allowance is equal to one metric ton of CO₂. The clearing price for RGGI CO₂ allowances in that auction was 21.03 U.S. dollars, a record high.
The RGGI is a cooperative, market-based program among the states of Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Vermont, that sets a cap to reduce power sector emissions. RGGI states distribute CO₂ allowances at quarterly auctions, where they can be purchased by power plants and other entities.
