In 2023, China added approximately seven additional gigawatts to the global hydropower production capacity. China added the largest additional hydropower capacity of any country in the world that year. Following China, Nigeria, also contributed significantly to the increase in hydropower capacity worldwide, with the addition of 740 megawatts in 2023.
