This is how the source conducted their method, translated:Â
"Through our other collected data and the manual supplementary work, we have over the years created a gross list of approximately 14,000 Instagram accounts that have around 10,000 followers or more. The data from these accounts is retrieved from Meta's own tool for journalists and researchers, Crowdtangle. In the fall of 2022, Crowdtangle has restricted so that external parties can no longer index Reels on Instagram. Since before, Meta also does not allow data collection via the Stories feature. This severely limits our ability to get a broad picture of the total commitment during a year. We therefore rely heavily on what an account averages on the measurable records of photos and albums in the regular feed. On Instagram, we therefore look exclusively at the only three measurement points we have access to: 1) number of followers, weighted according to the assumed proportion of Swedes 2) number of comments per post, weighted in the same way 3) number of likes per post, weighted in the same way. The reason we count the number of followers on Instagram and not on other platforms is that here we lack a measure of reach and that this is, under given circumstances, the best way to construct one. Even if we could count the cumulative number of likes, the importance of Stories and Reels means it would create a skewed picture of an account's influence and audience loyalty. Since Meta themselves do not make individual account data available from either Stories or Reels, this becomes our best way to measure the relevance, importance and impact of individual accounts. Also on Instagram it is difficult to obtain information about an account's national affiliation, but using the same method as described for YouTube above, supplemented with a manual sample of languages in comments on posts, we have been able to map the percentage of Swedes among followers and reactions."
