Casal Monferrato was the largest contaminated site in Italy, with a land extension of almost 74,000 hectares. The site is located in Piedmont, the Italian region with the largest contaminated land surface in the country. The soil of Casal Monferrato is contaminated with asbestos from a pre-existent asbestos-cement manufacturing plant. Casal Monferrato and the other contaminated sites in the country are undergoing safety assessments and remediation procedures.
