The Greater Cairo region, consisting of Cairo, parts of Giza, and Qalyubia, was the largest contributor to the Egyptian economy. In FY 2021, the gross domestic product (GDP) of the region amounted to almost three billion Egyptian pounds (about 62 billion U.S. dollars). This represented just over 45 percent of the country's GDP. The Alexandria region and Suez Canal region followed, with close to 970 billion and 903 billion Egyptian pounds, respectively.
