Just two small modular reactors (SMRs) were operational worldwide as of 2024, with 120 more in the planning or construction stages. SMRs are small, prefabricated nuclear fission reactors that offer greater flexibility and versatility compared to traditional nuclear power plants. SMRs can be used to power energy-intensive facilities such as data centers and manufacturing plants, and are therefore posed as a low-carbon means of meeting the surging demand for energy across the globe.
