Supplementary notes

Digital wallets is a broad term and, sometimes, has different definitions across sources. For this statistic, digital wallets refer to apps that securely store payment credentials and allow these to be used either in e-commerce shopping or in a brick-and-mortar store. Numbers can include stored value wallets (e.g., PaysafeCard) or mobile money apps from Africa (e.g., M-Pesa), if they fall in this definition. The figures shown, however, exclude the following categories:

Buy now, pay later (BNPL), such as Klarna or Affirm, which allow for temporary loans;
Apps from money transfer organizations (MTOs), such as Western Union or Wise, which are used for remittances.

All figures concern apps that can be downloaded on either the Apple App Store or Google's Play Store. This leads to several data limitations:

Figures do not include apps that are downloaded on other storefronts;
Embedded payment services within larger (super) apps are not tracked separately. For example, the source does not provide figures on Amazon Pay, as this is embedded in the Amazon app. This also applies to the likes of LINE, Grab, or even neobanks like Revolut;
Google Pay and Samsung Pay have no separate figures, as these services are integrated in wallets that offer multiple services;
The source cannot track Apple Pay, as this app cannot be downloaded from the Apple App Store;
The source does not clarify cross-border figures (e.g., users of China's WeChat in European countries). One could assume international travel or tourism plays a role, but this is not confirmed.

The names provided are based off multiple publications covering digital wallets and focus on providers with an app. If an app does not feature in the statistic, it is because MAU figures were too small.
