U.S.: M2 money stock 2000-2022

The value of M2 money supply in the U.S. amounted to 21.36 trillion U.S. dollars in 2022, which was a slight decrease compared to the previous year. While between 2000 and 2019, the M2 money supply increase at a relatively slow pace, there was an exceptionally sharp increase in 2020, which was the result of the Federal Reserve's quantitative easing in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

M2 consists of M1 plus: savings deposits (which include money market deposit accounts, or MMDAs); small-denomination time deposits (time deposits in amounts of less than 100,000 U.S. dollars); and balances in retail money market mutual funds (MMMFs). Seasonally adjusted M2 is computed by summing savings deposits, small-denomination time deposits, and retail MMMFs, each seasonally adjusted separately, and adding this result to seasonally adjusted M1."
