U.S. monthly employment level 2011-2023
In October 2023, about 161.68 million people were employed in the United States, a slight increase from the previous month. The number of employed people peaked in July 2023, the highest level since the COVID-19 pandemic began. Employed persons consist of: persons who did any work for pay or profit during the survey reference week; persons who did at least 15 hours of unpaid work in a family-operated enterprise; and persons who were temporarily absent from their regular jobs because of illness, vacation, bad weather, industrial dispute, or various personal reasons.
