A topical preparation which is usually applied to external skin with bare hands, cotton wool, gauze or a clean cloth, hand and body lotion is intended for application to unbroken skin to help smooth, re-hydrate and soften the epidermis and therefore remains as one of the leading health and body care products sold throughout the modern world.

In 2016, the Aveeno Active Naturals Daily Moisturizing brand had a sales share of 3.3 percent in the United States; which results in approximately 86.2 million U.S. dollars worth of sales. The Aveeno brand is owned by Johnson & Johnson, a multi-national medical devices, pharmaceutical and consumer packaged goods manufacturer.

As a result, the skin care product category was ranked fifth amongst the leading health and beauty care product categories in the United States, generating a total of approximately 3.49 billion U.S. dollars in sales. The slow recovering economy has had some impact on skin care sales, as well as the entire HBC category. However, skin care is a need-based and an extremely high penetration category with products that generate frequent and continued usage, which helps insulate the category to some degree.
