A total of 184 million visits were made to over 20,000 spa facilities across the United States in 2016. This is an increase of five million on the amount of visits made in 2015. The number of facilities in the country has also more than doubled between 2003 and 2016.
About 360,000 people were employed by the U.S. spa industry in 2015, of whom around 164,500 were part-time workers and a further 41,700 were contract workers. Total revenue of the spa industry in the United States was the highest to-date in 2016, with total earnings standing at 16.8 billion U.S. dollars. This marks a significant portion of the revenue of the global spa industry, which was estimated at around 99 billion U.S. dollars in 2015.
Spa travel is also becoming an increasingly important segment of the spa industry, with 73 percent of travel agents in North America reporting growth in spa travel bookings in 2013. Among the most important aspects of wellness programs to spa travelers from North America were traditional pampering, as well as exercise and weight loss. According to Condé Nast Traveler readers, the best spa resort worldwide in 2014 was Aro Hā in Queenstown, New Zealand. The best-rated resort in the United States was Cal-A-Vie in California, which also ranked second best worldwide.
