Electricity end use in the U.S. 1975-2018 End use of electricity in the United States totaled 3.82 trillion kilowatt hours in 2017, a decrease from the previous year. Electricity powers lights, heaters, computers, among other equipment, and is essential for modern society. Energy end use is that which is directly used by the user and includes electricity as well as natural gas and gasoline.
Electricity use in the United States has increased 13 fold since 1950 and consumption is expected to continue to increase in the next decades. Consumption has often been associated with economic growth and the United States experienced a reduction in consumption during the economic downturn. Technological improvements in efficiency and new appliance standards have also led to slower growth in electricity consumption.
