Growth tendencies - North America vs. Europe
Europe is the worldwide leader in international tourism with over 670 million international tourist arrivals in 2017. Comparatively, there were around 135 million international tourist arrivals in that year in North America alone. However, the inbound visitor numbers to North America are forecast to increase at a stable rate in the next years - growing by 3.8 percent from 2018 to 2019 and 2019 to 2020, respectively. In comparison, inbound international visitor numbers in Europe are estimated to grow slightly less than in North America - by only around three percent in the next two years.
Neighborly visits
Unsurprisingly, the largest proportion of international inbound visitors to the United States came from its neighboring countries – with approximately 19.3 million visitors coming from Canada and around 19 million from Mexico coming to the U.S.
