T-Mobile US branded prepaid customers 2012-2019, by quarter

In the third quarter of 2019, T-Mobile US had around 20.8 million mobile prepaid customers. The number has been slowly but steadily growing since 2013. The decrease in the third quarter of 2019 is due to an adjustment to reflect a new agreement with a current MVNO partner.

T-Mobile's subscribers

T-Mobile's prepaid customers account for about a fourth of the company's total consumer base. More than half of the telecom provider's subscribers are postpaid mobile contract customers. The last and smallest group consists of Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) and Machine-to-Machine (M2M) wholesale customers. In the second quarter of 2019, roughly 17 million customers belonged to this category.

Postpaid, prepaid and wholesale

Branded postpaid customers generally include subscribers who receive the wireless communication services for their devices first and pay for them afterward. In contrast, branded prepaid subscribers pay for wireless services in advance. Wholesale customers are customers who operate on the network but are managed by an intermediary entity, often referred to as resellers or wholesale partners.

* In May 2013 T-Mobile and MetroPCS reached a merger agreement raising the number of customers ** On July 18, 2019, the company entered into an agreement whereby certain T-Mobile branded prepaid products are now offered and distributed by a current MVNO partner. As a result, a base adjustment was made to reduce branded prepaid customers by 616,000. Prospectively, new customer activity associated with these products is recorded within wholesale customers.
