Z Holdings and SoftBank

Z Holdings Corporation was formerly known as Yahoo! Japan Corporation and renamed in October 2019. The company is a subsidiary of SoftBank Corp., one of Japan’s main mobile communications companies, and operates the website and search engine Yahoo! Japan, which is one of the most popular online brands in Japan. The portal acts as a news aggregator and offers advertising and e-commerce functions. In early 2021, Z Holdings merged with LINE Corporation, which operates LINE, Japan’s leading instant messenger. It is expected that the integration will create valuable synergies for SoftBank, whose operations include a consumer segment, an enterprise segment, and a distribution segment, next to the Yahoo segment.

Business segments

Z Holdings engages predominantly in commerce and media. A breakdown of the revenue by segment shows that the commerce business is the largest segment of the company. In the commerce field, the company offers various e-commerce-related services, such as shopping, auction, and flea market services, as well as membership and payment-related services. Since fiscal year 2015, Z Holdings has been offering credit cards to customers, and in October 2018, the company introduced the cashless payment service PayPay, which allows users to conduct payments via smartphones. The media field consists mainly of media-related and online advertising services, which focus on the Yahoo! Japan portal and the instant messenger LINE.
