Global aluminum demand and supply growth rates
Aluminum is one of the most produced and used based metals in the world. Approximately 48 million metric tons of primary aluminum and over 96 million metric tons of alumina were used worldwide in 2012. That same year, around 49 million metric tons of primary aluminum and over 100 million metric tons of alumina were produced. In the United States, some 2.1 million tons of primary aluminum metal were produced in 2012. The United States was the fourth largest producing country of primary aluminum in 2012, trailing China, Russia, and Canada. China was the largest producer of primary aluminum in 2012. More than 20 million metric tons of primary aluminum was produced here. China’s largest producer of aluminum is Chalco (Aluminum Corporation of China Limited. The state-backed company was ranked as the world’s largest aluminum producing company in 2013, having produced over 4.2 million metric tons that year. Chalco generated revenue of over 27 billion U.S. dollars and employed 90,207 people that same year.
There has long been an aluminum demand/supply imbalance which is expected to have narrowed in 2014. Between 2011 and 2012, the worldwide refinery production of aluminum increased by approximately 3 million tons.
