Facebook user data – additional information
Due to the evolving nature of the Facebook platform, its data policy has had to be changed and altered over the years. Between 2005 and 2014 the word count of Facebook’s data use policy has been counted. In 2005 the document totalled 1004 words, yet by 2012 the document totalled over 9200 words and it remained at 9291 words in both 2013 and 2014.
Federal agencies and governments have the right to request user data from Facebook. This issue was highlighted in late 2014, when Facebook came under attack from the British press for not releasing relevant information on the men responsible for the supposed pre planned murder on the British soldier Lee Rigby. The number of user data requests from Facebook was recorded in the first six months of 2014. During that period, agencies and governments in the United States made 15,433 requests. This figure was higher than any other country. In comparison, officials in Singapore only made 129 user data requests.
Of course user data can be used for less serious reasons than crime. The type and degree of which social profile data was collected by internet retailers through social logins via Facebook was established as of August 2013. During that time, 47 percent of internet retailers obtained users’ dates of birth through Facebook logins to their site. A further 28 percent were able to collect a user’s location via the same method.
