Market share held by selected automakers in the U.S.
Based on their share of the U.S. auto market, General Motors, Ford and the Toyota Motor Corporation are the most successful automakers in the United States. The Ford Motor Company mainly sells vehicles under its namesake brand, while the Toyota Motor Corporation offers several brands, including Lexus and Toyota. General Motors is the automotive manufacturer_ with the highest number of different brands available, with Chevrolet and GMC being the most popular ones in the United States. Between 2015 and 2016, the trend for U.S. car manufacturers’ sales on home soil remained flat: Ford’s market sales fell by 0.1 percent to 2.6 million units in 2016, while General Motors saw a decrease by 1.3 percent to a little over three million units in 2016. Chrysler, FCA’s Michigan-headquartered division, reported a 2016 market sales of 2.2 million units, down by around 0.4 percent, compared to a year earlier.
Among the non-domestic manufacturers, Asian automakers proved to be the most successful group. Asian carmakers selling vehicles to U.S. customers include Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Hyundai, Subaru and Kia.
