In 2018, Michigan-based General Motors (GM) held about 17 percent of the car and light truck market in the United States. GM sells vehicles under the following brands: Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, GMC, Holden, Jiefang, OnStar, Wuling, Baojun. In 2017, PSA Group and GM closed a deal in which the French carmaker acquired GM's Opel and Vauxhall brand.

General Motors is the automotive manufacturer with the highest number of different brands available, with Chevrolet and GMC being the most popular ones in the United States.

Among the non-domestic manufacturers, Asian automakers proved to be the most successful group. Asian carmakers selling vehicles to U.S. customers include Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Hyundai, Subaru and Kia.
