Additional information: media penetration in Indonesia

With regards to population Indonesia is the world's fourth largest country and as of 2012, 51 percent of its 238 million inhabitants lived in urban areas. The literacy rate for the entire country (both urban and rural areas) was 90.4 percent in 2004 - more than six percent higher than the global average.

Despite that, the share of the population who regularly use print media is small, and in keeping with the global trend, the number of print media readers has also been falling. In 2012, newspapers were regularly read by 55 percent of urban Indonesians, a significant decrease compared to 69 percent in 2008. The situation looks even more daunting for magazine media - in this segment the penetration rate fell from 24 percent in 2009 to just 12 percent in 2012. Cinema and radio audiences have not escaped the trend either and have also been shrinking in recent times.

TV is the only medium that reaches Indonesia’s entire urban population, and which has not seen a significant change over the past four years. The internet penetration rate on the other hand has been growing rapidly and has more than doubled over the presented period. Internet is also the medium, with which Indonesian spent the most time in 2012. PC and mobile amounted to over 5.5 hours of daily media time, compared to 2.6 hours with TV and around 46 minutes with physical print.
