Online retail users in Mexico 2017-2024

Mexico is one of the largest e-commerce markets in Latin America, surpassed only by Brazil and Argentina, and accounted for 19.6% of the region’s e-commerce market in 2017. The number of e-commerce users in the country is expected to grow from 56.5 million in 2017 to 81.4 million in 2024. MercadoLibre, Amazon and Coppel were the most popular e-Commerce websites in Mexico, as on March 2019.

Strong macro-economic indicators supporting Mexico’s e-commerce growth

Mexico’ s e-commerce growth rate is supported mainly by strong macro-economic indicators such as falling unemployment rates and low inflation rates. Moreover, the growing percentage of Mexicans utilizing the Internet and increasing penetration of smartphones are also contributing to market’s robust growth over the medium term.

Unsurprisingly, e-commerce sales revenue from the desktop segment is going to be supplanted by mobile in 2022. This is expected to be true for cross-border purchases as well, even though more than half of Mexican shoppers prefer desktop/laptops/notebook over smartphones currently.

Supplementary notes

The e-commerce market includes the sale of physical goods via a digital channel to a private end user (B2C). This comprises purchases via desktop computer (including notebooks and laptops) as well as purchases via mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. The main sales channels are cross-brand online mail order companies and the online shops of individual companies. All monetary figures refer to the annual gross revenue and do not factor in shipping costs.
