Internet TV and Netflix – additional information
In October 2014, the share of TV viewers who accessed TV content over the internet on a weekly basis was surveyed in selected countries worldwide. The survey revealed that 68 percent of respondents from China accessed TV content over the internet at least once a week. In comparison, viewers in the United States accounted for a 29 percent share and Germany’s TV viewers were made up of a 20 percent share. This suggests that aside from China, other viewers from countries that were surveyed still enjoyed TV content via traditional formats.
Netflix is a popular name in the internet TV industry and a comparison of pay TV subscribers who had a Netflix account in the U.S. in 2013 and 2014, broken down by age, reveals that this popularity is increasing. Each age group surveyed experienced an increase in its share of Netflix subscribers. In 2014, 58 percent of respondents aged 50 to 59 years had both a pay TV and a Netflix subscription, this was up from a 19 percent share the year before.
Regardless of whether or not Netflix users have subscriptions with other TV providers, the monthly time spent streaming Netflix content per subscriber worldwide has increased every quarter between the fourth quarter 2011 and the second quarter 2014. In the last measured quarter, the monthly time spent streaming on Netflix amounted to 46.6 hours per subscriber.
