Reddit usage reach in the United States 2021, by age group

According to a survey of U.S. adults conducted at the beginning of 2021, 36 percent of respondents who indicated using Reddit were aged between 18 and 29 years old. Reddit usage tends to be affected by users’ age, with older users reporting lower levels of engagement. The platform’s app on Android also appears to be popular the most among Reddit users aged between 20 and 29, which accounted for 28 percent of the app’s user base.

Reddit engagement in numbers

In August 2020, almost 480 thousand people were reported engaging with Reddit content in the span of an internet minute. Reddit is one of the most popular websites in the forum category, allowing users to interact in multiple close-knitted communities organized in sub-threads and divided by topics. Between July 2020 and March 2021, Reddit.com registered an average of 1.6 billion monthly visits from desktop and mobile combined. Reddit users are mostly based in North America, with the United States accounting for the biggest share of traffic worldwide by far.

The future of Reddit

It is no news that Reddit has been trying to revamp its image for quite some time now. The platform, which was created in 2005, was redesigned for the very first time in 2018 to make it more appealing to new users and increase engagement from non-participating guests (jokingly called “lurkers”) who nonetheless enjoy the content. In 2020, the company disclosed its daily active users’ count, which averaged 52 million in October. Due also to the general increase in social media usage brought by the global outbreak of coronavirus pandemic, between 2019 and 2021 Reddit monthly active users grew by 30 percent worldwide. Reddit’s plans for the future include exploring new formats: in 2020 the company acquired social media and TikTok competitor Dubsmash to possibly integrate its main platform with short videos, and in April 2021 Reddit revealed it will launch its own social audio platform à la Clubhouse, called Reddit Talk.
