China is one of the largest mobile phone markets in the world. Over three quarters of the Chinese population are predicted to use a mobile in 2017. This figure is forecast to grow to nearly 80 percent by 2019. It is estimated that the number of mobile connections in China will amount to more than 1.4 billion by 2019.
Google’s Android has been the most popular operating system worldwide since early 2011, taking over the top position from Symbian OS. In China, this shift happened in early 2012 when Google’s Android had 36.17 percent of the share, compared to Symbian’s 18.75 percent. Within only one year, the share of the Android OS increased to almost two thirds of the market. Apple’s iOS is the second most popular operating system in China, with a quarter of the share as of February 2017.
Smartphone users in China were predicted to account for around 56 percent of all mobile phone users in 2017. This figure is expected to grow to more than 60 percent by 2019. Android is also the most popular operating system among Chinese smartphone users, with almost 77 percent of the share as of March 2021.
