Airbus in financial markets

Airbus is a trans-European aerospace manufacturer and holds a strong market position in manufacturing aircraft for worldwide usage. Since 2011, the earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) of Airbus increased continuously, reaching over 6.3 billion euros in 2019. Compared to the growth pattern in the Airbus group’s revenue, the EBIT of the company increased at a much higher pace during that period. From 2010 to 2019, the expenditure of Airbus Group on research and development (R&D) increased gradually, reaching over 3.8 billion euros in the fiscal year 2019. As a result of high and increasing R&D expenditure, Airbus constantly expanded its patent pool to bring new innovations and sustain its market position in the aerospace industry. For instance, Airbus held the most number of patent applications at the European Patent Office in 2018 in the field of transport engines, pumps and turbines, with 253 patent applications.

Airbus and Boeing as an aerospace and defense manufacturer

In terms of commercial aircraft manufacturing, Airbus and Boeing are two dominating firms, supplying the majority of aircraft globally. Yet both companies have a much diversified operating portfolio, including arms and military production. In 2018, Airbus was the second leading aerospace and defense manufacturer worldwide based on sales, with over 75 billion U.S. dollars. When we restrict the goods manufactured to arms-producing and military services, then Airbus Group as a trans-European company is the seventh-largest company in the world by arms sales, with over 11 billion U.S. dollars sales in 2018. On the other hand, Boeing was the second-largest arms-producing company globally, with over 29 billion U.S. dollars of arms sales during the same period.
