Social networking is one of the most popular internet activities in North America, particularly in the United States. A total of 81 percent of internet users in the United States have a social network profile. The number of social network users in the United States is projected to increase from 195.7 million in 2016 to over 216 million users in 2021. Facebook is, by far, the most popular social media site. Almost fourth fifths of internet users in the United States accessed Facebook as of April 2016.

The social media video platform YouTube is the second most used social media site in the country, accounting for over 25 percent of all visits. Twitter is the third most popular social media site with 5.3 of the share, closely followed by Reddit, which accounts for over five percent. Even though Pinterest is the not the most popular social media site in the U.S., the visual social sharing platform ranks the third-highest in consumer satisfaction in the United States. YouTube is ranked second in terms of user satisfaction, just behind leader Wikipedia.

Social network sites are also especially popular on mobile. Several social networks ranked among the most popular smartphone apps in the U.S., with Facebook, Facebook Messenger and YouTube leading the ranking again. During an annual study of mobile online usage, it was found that Facebook accounts for 19 percent of the time spent on mobile apps and devices in the U.S. According to the study, 12 percent of mobile device time is spent on further messaging and social activities.
