Industrial electricity prices in select countries in Europe 2018

Industrial electricity prices in selected countries in Europe 2018, by amount consumed (in euro cents per kilowatt hour)

by Ian Tiseo, last edited Sep 2, 2019
Industrial electricity prices in select countries in Europe 2018 The prices industrial consumers pay for electricity varies depending on their annual power consumption. In 2018, industrial end-users in Germany with an annual consumption of 500 to 2,000 megawatt-hours paid 14.99 euro cents per kilowatt-hour of electricity, which was the highest in Europe. In comparison, those with a consumption of 20,000 to 70,000 megawatt-hours paid 8.6 euro cents. Of the countries listed, Swedish industrial consumers enjoyed the cheapest electricity prices for both consumption bands.
Electricity pricing factors

Generally, industrial consumers pay less for electricity than residential consumers. Industrial consumers use more electricity and can receive it at higher voltages. This means that supplying energy to industrial consumers is more efficient, therefore cheaper. Whilst energy prices vary by country, they can also vary within a country itself. The energy source, demand, the time of use, taxes, levies and surcharges all play a role in electricity prices. In Germany, renewable surcharges made up 21 percent of household power prices.

Global electricity prices

Globally, European countries pay some of the highest prices for electricity. In 2018, German consumers paid the highest prices at more than 30 U.S. cents per kilowatt-hour, followed by Belgium and Italy. Consumers in Argentina paid considerably less at one cent per kilowatt-hour.
