Production of anthracite (or hard coal) in the United States has significantly declined in the past few decades. While nearly 50 million short tons of anthracite were mined in 1950, by the 2000's this figure had dropped to 4.5 million short tons, before declining further to a around two million short tons annually from 2001 onwards.
