Supplementary notes

A positive percentage represents an increase of hunger and malnutrition in the country concerned, a negative value shows a decrease and thus an improvement in the hunger situation. The Global Hunger Index is based on three relevant indicators:
1. the proportion of undernourished people among the population in percent (Indicator for the proportion of people who can not meet their calorie requirement)
2. the proportion of children under five who are underweight (an indicator of the proportion of children who weigh too little for their age)
3. the mortality rate among children under five years (indicator, that reflects the fatal combination of poor nutrition and unhealthy environment).
This year's index considered data from 2003 to 2009 and thus the most recent, globally available measurements of the three GHI components. However, the current situation can not not be depicted. For some countries, where moderate to serious hunger prevails, such as Afghanistan, Iraq, Papua New Guinea and Somalia, not enough data to calculate the GHI were available.
States that had a value of less than 5 in both, the 1990 GHI and GHI in 2011, were not included.
