At the end of May 2019, the NYSE was ranked as the largest stock exchange operator by market capitalization with a total value of tradable shares amounting to 23.21 trillion U.S. dollars, three times larger than the second largest operator, NASDAQ. While NASDAQ was the first stock market to start trading online, NYSE is the first global equities exchange. NYSE exchange has successfully grown into the powerhouse that it is today, due to a series of international mergers. The NYSE merged with Euronext which was the first integrated cross-border exchange and now NYSE trades almost twice as many foreign companies than NASDAQ.

The London Stock exchange also trades high number of foreign company shares, but it is currently only ranked number four on the list of the largest stock exchange operators in the world. NASDAQ has not had as much success in terms of market capitalization and growth. Between 1999 and 2013, the number of component companies on the NASDAQ stock exchange reduced from around 4,700 to around 2,500. However, these components are about twice the size as they were in 1999.
