Global shipments of tablets, laptops and desktop PC’s – additional information

A laptop refers to a portable personal computer, which is suitable for mobile use, also known as a notebook computer. Research by Credit Suisse suggests that notebook shipments are decreasing steadily. Global revenue generated by laptops has been dropping since its peak in 2010, with one possible explanation being the falling average price of notebooks. Previous estimates suggested that, by 2015, the average selling price of laptops would have dropped by 65 percent compared to 2005.

Meanwhile, the desktop PC segment is projected to lose popularity over the next few years, as the tablet market gains momentum. Desktop PC shipments are expected to fall from 134 million units shipped in 2014 to 103 million units shipped in 2016. In 2015, 13.8 percent of the world’s population owned a tablet device, with this figure predicted to increase to almost 18 percent by 2018. One factor behind this trend resides in the preference of emerging markets for mobile devices over desktop computers. Consumers in emerging markets typically start out with mobile phones and then directly move to tablets instead of desktop computers.
