Catastrophe bonds are financial instruments allowing to raise money in case of a catastrophe. They are usually used by insurance companies to transfer some risk to cat bonds investors. If a catastrophe occurs, the insurance companies can use the money coming from cat bonds to pay out the premiums to the insurance holders. If there is no catastrophe in the specified time frame, the cat bond investors get their money invested in the bond back, increased by a coupon. The value of risk capital outstanding on catastrophe bonds globally increased from 12.2 billion U.S. dollars in 2010 to 28.6 billion U.S. dollars in 2018.
