Global oil refinery throughput 1990 & 2021, by country
The United States has the largest oil refinery throughput in the world. In 2021, refineries in the U.S. handled over 17.5 million barrels of crude oil every day. When compared to 1990, this represented an increase of roughly 31 percent. By comparison, daily throughput in Chinese refineries increased from 2.15 million in 1990 to 14.5 million in 2021. In the latter year, total worldwide oil refinery throughput stood at over 79 million barrels per day.
