The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic hit the tourism sector hard in 2020, with countries worldwide enacting travel bans to face the health crisis. As a result of the travel restrictions, the global number of outbound visitors fell sharply that year. In the Americas, the volume of outbound travelers declined by 71.2 percent in 2020 over the previous year, while it dropped by 67.2 percent in Europe. As forecast, after a moderate increase in 2021, the global number of outbound tourists was expected to bounce back in 2022, especially in the Asia Pacific region.
