Systemically-important banks are institutions whose economic impact is too great to let them go bankrupt. At the time of the survey, the aggregate balance sheet of the systemically-important banks in the United Kingdom totaled around 8.6 trillion U.S. dollars. By comparison, the GDP of the United Kingdom amounted to around 2.3 trillion U.S. dollars.
