In 2021, Shell's upstream segment had the most earnings, at nearly 9.7 billion U.S. dollars. This was a noticeable difference from the previous year, when this segment had a loss of 10.8 billion U.S. dollars. In 2020, te chemicals segment was the only of Shell's business segments to report an income. That year, a fall in fuel demand severely hampered profits for the company's upstream segment, which reported losses of nearly 11 billion U.S. dollars. This was a greater loss than reported during the oil glut in 2015 and 2016. Shell is one of the top five oil and gas companies worldwide, operating in every segment of the oil and gas industry. The company has announced it will reduce its involvement in fossil fuel production and instead focus on its chemicals segment and alternative energy sources such as hydrogen.
