Trade union membership in the United Kingdom (UK) 1995-2017, by sector This statistic shows the number of trade union members in the United Kingdom (UK) from 1995 to 2017, broken down by sector. Over this 22 year period, there were consistently more members of public sector unions than private sector ones. This difference was at its greatest in 2010, with a difference of 1.7 million in members. While public sector membership has experienced only slight fluctuations over this time period, private sector unions experienced a decrease of around 700 thousand members. In 2017, membership in the private sector amounted to around 2.69 million people, compared with 3.54 million people in the public sector.
