Since 2000, Canadian mobile cellular subscriptions have been increasing year-over-year and as of 2012 totaled 80.05 subscriptions per 100 inhabitants. Of smartphone users that have a connection to mobile content, the most popular categories accessed by a smartphone include sending text messages, accessing news and information, and using an online browser. The volume of mobile messaging in 2012 was 97 billion messages, in 2011 that number was only 80 billion messages.

There are also many additional activities to explore on a smartphone. In 2014, 33 percent of internet users accessed social media via their mobile device, web-based videos have 8.3 million mobile subscribers, and among 18 to 34 year olds, 33 percent are using their smartphones to make online purchases. New communication apps are also becoming popular among smartphone owners. In 2014, 13 percent of Canadians used WhatsApp, and in 2015, SnapChat had a penetration rate among teen mobile internet users of 41 percent.
