Number of suicide fatalities on railways in Great Britain 2001-2018 The number of railway fatalities caused by suicides in Great Britain increased from 192 fatalities in 2001/02, to 249 fatalities in 2017/18. Although this is an increase over the 18 years in question, the number of fatalities recorded in 2017/18 were the second lowest at any time since 2011/12. In 2017/18 there were 298 deaths on railways, which was an increase compared to the previous two years.
Growth in major and minor injury instances

In 2016/17, there were 47 instances where suicide attempts on railways had led to major injuries. This was nearly 30 percent more than in the year prior. That same reporting period also saw an uptick in the number of people receiving minor injuries from such attempts.

Total suicide numbers in decline

Overall, there were 5,821 recorded suicides among those aged 10 years and older in the United Kingdom in 2017. Figures have been declining from a peak in 2013.
