According to the MasterCard Global Destination Cities Index, the city with the highest international visitor spend was Dubai in 2016. In 2016, leisure tourists vacationing in London were the highest spenders compared to other visitors. The second largest spenders are generally business travelers who have an expenditure of more than half as much as those on vacation. As well as highest visitor spend, London also had the second highest number of international visitors in 2016. Around 19.06 million people visited the city from abroad in that year. The number of city tourists in London has increased annually.

Despite the increased popularity in the city as a vacation destination, London was not the most popular city in terms of tourist experience. A worldwide survey conducted by Conde Nast Traveler in 2015 found Florence in Italy to be the best-rated city in the world. London placed only tenth in the survey of 128,000 respondents.

New York City ranked third in terms of the cities with the highest international visitor spend in 2016, having generated 17.02 billion U.S. dollars. As with London, the number of international overnight visitors to New York has increased in recent years. Between 2010 and 2015, the annual number of international visitors to the city has grown by over 3 million people. New York City’s high visitor numbers could be attributed to the popular tourist attractions found in the city. In 2014, Time Square in New York was the second most visited tourist attraction in the world after the Las Vegas strip with 39.2 million visitors. Additionally, New York’s Central Park ranked third with 37.5 million visitors. The city also has a wide range of cultural draws. In 2016, the musicals, plays and specials on Broadway attracted around 13.27 million people.
