Total revenues for automotive company Tesla Inc. surpassed 21.4 billion U.S. dollars in 2018 with automotive sales accounting for 17.6 billion U.S. dollars. Tesla Inc., which began as Tesla Motors in 2003, is the best-selling brand of plug-in electric vehicles.

No loss on vision

Elon Musk has come under criticism for prioritizing company operations over capital. Despite being the top-selling electric-vehicle manufacturer in the world over the past few years, Tesla continues to operate at a loss. The lack of large-scale assembly lines had previously prevented mass production that is necessary to boost profit. It is suggested that a European factory will be required to compete in what is projected to become the largest EV market in the world. A new production plant being built in China is expected to increase profit margins, particularly in Tesla’s second largest market. China is currently the largest electric vehicle (EV) market and home to Tesla’s largest competitors.
