The number of people employed full-time by Tesla came to 48,817 at the end of 2018. The size of the global market for electric vehicles is expected to reach 567 billion U.S. dollars in revenue in 2025.
Meeting the demands of the EV industry
The steady increase in the number of employees is in line with escalating production, as Tesla works to provide an affordable electric vehicle, the Model 3, for the broader market. To reach these goals, in 2016 Tesla opened a lithium-ion battery and electric vehicle factory called Gigafactory 1 located near Reno, Nevada, followed by Gigafactory 2 in 2017 near Buffalo, New York. This is around the time that the number of Tesla employees sharply increased.
A growing presence in the auto industry
In order to get a foothold in the Chinese auto market, Shanghai-based Gigafactory 3 began construction in 2018. Sales in electric vehicles in Chinese customers are projected to purchase almost five million electric vehicles in 2025.
