This statistic shows the percentage of U.S. retail dispensed prescriptions by paid out-of-pocket costs in 2012 and 2013. In 2012, some 10 percent of retail dispensed prescriptions cost between 10.01 and 20 U.S. dollars paid out-of-pocket. Generic drugs have accounted for almost all the growth in prescription rates that cost under 5 U.S. dollars.

Out-of-pocket costs cover prescriptions dispensed at retail pharmacies for patients with private insurance, Medicare Part D, Medicaid, and include co-payments and
co-insurance as relevant.
