Number of physiotherapists in the United Kingdom (UK) 2010-2021

In 2021, there were approximately 57 thousand physiotherapists employed in the United Kingdom. This represents a significant increase from the start of the provided time interval, when there were around 44 thousand physiotherapists employed in the country.

Frequency of visiting physios in Britain

As of 2018, there were 33 percent of individuals in Great Britain who were living with a long-standing limiting health condition or illness. This is slightly higher than the share of those in similar sized Western European countries such as Spain and France. 19 percent of people in Great Britain stated they visit a physical or occupational therapist at least once a year. In comparison to other European countries, Great Britain has a lower frequency of physiotherapist consultations. 

Other healthcare positions are also increasing

Across the same time period, the number of physicians in the UK has increased by over 70 thousand, resulting in approximately 189 thousand physicians in 2018. Additionally, the number of practicing nurses in the UK has also increased by around eight percent between 2000 and 2018, to approximately 517 thousand nurses in 2018.
