The number of vehicles was increasing steadily between 1997 and 2003 after which it decreased slightly until in 2007 it peaked at over 67 thousand vehicles; the highest registered number of licensed HGVs in the whole of Great Britain over this period. In 2017 there were 61 thousand licensed HGVs in West Midlands.
